  1. This cartoon is trying to evoke anger by having a skeleton of a bear. The skeleton and the brown grass can be interpretated as death. There is also no "cool" colors (blues, greens) like on the normal flag to balance out the harsh image of the bear. I believe that the cartoonist is trying to make a statement about irony in how California has the California Grizzly Bear as their state animal, when in fact the state has lead to its extinction. Now the last of the CA Bears, which died in 1911, is on diplay.

The appeal that the cartoon is making is that California is dying because of the republicans. The color red as well as the red star symolizes the republican party while the skull of the animal symbolizes death and the suffering of the common people. Together, the cartoon portrays how the doing of the republicans hurt the state of California economically and personally.

  3. The cartoon is either trying to evoke anger or sadness. The main trait of the cartoon is the grizzly skeleton. This image may represent death of California’s economy because things have worsened tremendously since the recession. The brown grass further emphasizes the representations of death. Many Californians are suffering under the current economic situation. The position of the grizzly is used to express how many feel, such as hopeless and just barely able to survive. This is to make the viewer feel the pain of those that are suffering. By using the California flag the subjects of the cartoon has to directly relate to the people of the state or something that is connected to the state. The cartoon is attacking the well-being of some kind of issue and is showing that it is in a bad state.

  5. This political cartoon appeals to the Republican Party and its influence as a whole on California. The red star and stripe (instead of being blue, which would represent the Democratic Party) symbolizes the Republican Party existing in California. The picture conveys an illustration of what California would be like if it surrounded the conservative party, in which the state would suffer. The skeleton figure of the bear symbolizes Californians suffering under republican management. California wouldn’t survive economically or politically if it were to follow the republican party. The grass being brown symbolizes the bear walking through a desert, which shows the adversity the people would bear upon, just as it is hard to survive in the desert alone.

  6. This cartoon is an attempt by the cartoonist to portray California’s failure at maintaining its promised noble qualities. The bear, which initially represents the “great strength” of California, is depicted as a skeleton; showing the power, success, and durability California used to have. This cartoon most likely is referring to the downfall of California’s economy, where the great and revered image of California during the Gold Rush is long gone and has now withered away into a skeleton. In my opinion, this cartoon is exaggerating in how it depicts California’s (the bear’s) condition, but an emphasis on certain aspects is sometimes necessary in a cartoon in order to attract more attention. As for the colors, the color Old Glory Red is the focus color and has not been altered by the cartoonist. Instead of symbolizing strength and virility, I believe this red has been removed of its initial meaning and changed to represent blood and the suffering of California’s economy. Overall, this image is designed to make an emotional appeal to its audience, using death to spread awareness of California’s critical situation. Smeeth.

This cartoon is trying to present to the audience as California being dead yet still on it's feet. The Bear that is originally depicted on the original flag, which was hunted and poached untill its exctinction, is still on its feet as is this skeleton bear. With that in mind the bear is essentially able but only its skeleton. This depicts life in something that is supposedly dead. From this the picture still depicts California as alive, still one of the top economies in the world, with the skeleton being that ecomomic power as its basis (which is what bones do, provide structure and a base for the body). With it just having its bones it is managing but stripped of other things such as organs, skin, and fur which could represent their abscence because of diseases in the form of debt or the recession.
